AT&T Home Security System - Central Controller (CC) Battery Change

19 April 2007

There is a sealed, lead cell type, battery (system battery backup) in the AT&T Home Security System central controller (CC), which periodically has to be replaced whenever the CC reports an internal battery problem. CC battery replacement is not difficult and a replacement battery can be found at Radio Shack or other battery stores (Radio Shack model 23-289).

Since I have had the system for some 14 years now, I have had to replace the original battery, twice.

To replace the battery in the CC:

(1) Call the central monitoring station (if you have a monitoring company) and tell them that you are going to be working on the system.

(2) Using a wireless keypad, enter your home's security code and press the “OFF” key.

(3) Unplug the CC's power transformer from its power outlet.

(4) Remove the face plate of the CC by removing the 2 flat blade screws holding it in place to the CC chassis.

(5) Remove the wires running to the battery and take the old battery out (battery just sits on a shelf inside CC and lifts right out).

(6) Take defective battery with you to whatever store you visit. The battery shelf in the CC is fairly narrow and although some stores might claim they have a replacement for the battery you carry in, their replacement could be wider than what is required and so check out any suggested battery closely.

(7) Insert new battery into CC case and attach wires.

(8) Replace front CC cover.

(9) Plug the CC power transformer back into the power outlet.

(10) Clear all CC messages.

(11) Call the monitoring station to tell them you are done working on system.
