"HP DV1000 - How to Replace the Cooling Fan or Renew Cooling Fan Thermal Paste"

18 February 2011

Summary: must remove bottom cover and then 4 screws on cooling fan.

Background:

One cause of random laptop shut downs, is the CPU chip becoming too hot and it protecting itself by showing down the entire laptop.

The CPU chip can become too hot if: the cooling fan vents on the laptop are blocked; the cooling fan is dead or not turning or a poor thermal interface between the CPU chip and the cooling fan.

If the cooling fan on your laptop is not turning, you must replace it.

If the cooling fan on your laptop is turning, then you need to renew the thermal paste between the top of the CPU chip and the bottom of the cooling fan.

Tools and Supplies:

Phillips screwdriver with sharp points.

If fan is not turning, replacement cooling fan. Either from manufacturer or eBay or other. Must be for your specific laptop.

Thermal paste. Available at Radio Shack, computer stores or over the Internet.

How to replace the cooling fan or renew cooling fan thermal paste:

Shut down Windows.

Unplug laptop from power adapter.

Remove laptop battery.

Remove bottom cover.

There are 4 screws holding the cooling fan down to the motherboard. In the metal of the cooling fan, there are numbers as to the order the cooling fan must be removed or reinstalled. I have highlighted these numbers in cooling fan image below.

Loosen cooling fan screws and carefully lift the cooling fan off the top of the CPU chip.

If you are replacing the cooling fan assembly, unplug it from the motherboard

Gently remove any old thermal paste on the cooling fan or top of the CPU chip. A tissue is fine to do this. Do not use any sort of liquid cleaner.

Now take thermal paste and apply to the top of the CPU chip. Not a huge amount but enough that can be spread evenly over the top of the chip.

Place cooling fan back on top of CPU chip, align screws to mounting studs in motherboard and screw down cooling fan screws in order.

If you replaced the cooling fan, connect its cable to the connector on the motherboard.

Reattach the bottom of the laptop.
