“Windows Explorer Crashes in WinXP”
Want to use WinXP Cd write capability but every time I
try to copy image files to my CD drive, I get a Windows Explorer crash. Does not crash when I copy an entire folder but
can not copy a large number of files.
Search Internet and not a lot of help, but find a site
where I am told, could be a shell extension causing the problem. For those that
do not know, a shell extension is something you get when you right click your mouse.
Lots of applications add options to the mouse right click, such as zip
programs, antivirus, etc.
In the Internet article I found, it told me to
download a free utility that would show all the shell extensions installed and
enabled. The name of the utility was Shexview.zip.
I downloaded it and unzipped it and immediately
disabled all the shell extensions Shexview found. I tried writing many jpeg
images to my CD drive and all worked well. I then enable about 1\3rd
of all the shell extensions and tried my CD write task again. No problem.
In the end, I worked my way through all my shell
extensions, disabling a block at a time and trying my CD burn and then enabling
the disabled block and disabling a new block, all in an attempt to find the
offending shell extension.
Sad to say, I worked all the way through all my
extensions and could not find an extension that caused the problem, but the
problem is gone! Perhaps enabling and then disabling, changed something
somewhere and that took care of the problem.
