Tivo: How to Get a Tivo Recorded Program to DVD

4 April 2007

Background:

I have 2 Series II Tivo boxes.

I have the Tivo Desktop application installed on 3 personal computers  (PC).

My Tivo's each use an USB-to-Ethernet adapter (100 Megabits per second) to connect to a 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) Ethernet switch, which is then connected to a CAT5e 1Gbps Ethernet cable.

All my PC, Tivo servers, have 1Gbps Ethernet interfaces to the same 1Gbps Ethernet cable.

My router has 1Gbps Ethernet ports.

Using Tivo Desktop, I can see programs that have been recorded on my 2 Tivo boxes and download a copy of any program to any of my 3 PC Tivo servers (on holds nothing but DVD quality movies, one holds Tivo recorded movies and one holds Tivo recorded  television show episodes).

Now sometimes, the downloaded program is so good, I want to create a DVD backup of it but how?

How to Get a Tivo Recording to a DVD:

1.All Tivo recordings end with a .tivo extension meaning that the recording is more than a simple .mpg file. To be able to burn a copy of the recorded program, the Tivo recording must be converted from .tivo to .mpg.

2.To convert .tivo files to .mpg files, I use a free tool called Directshow Filter Dump.

3.Once I have a Tivo recorded program in .mpg format, I use Ulead MovieFactory to set up and burn a DVD. Because the recorded program is in .mpg format, other DVD burner software should work.  I did try the Tivo website recommended Sonic MyDVD but it crashed on me and I dumped it for Ulead.
