Tivo: Getting a Tivo Recording to DVD

4 April 2007

I have 2 Series II Tivo boxes, each with a 802.1G wireless adapter.

I have Tivo Desktop version 2.3a installed on my main computer which is tied to a Linksys WRT54G router.

Using Tivo Desktop, I can see programs that have been recorded on my 2 Tivo boxes and download a copy of any program to my main computer for subsequent playback.

Now sometimes, the downloaded program is so good, I want to create a DVD backup of it but how?

1.All Tivo recordings end with a .tivo extension meaning that the recording is more than a simple .mpg file. To be able to burn a copy of the recorded program, the Tivo recording must be converted from .tivo to .mpg.

2.To convert .tivo files to .mpg files, I use a free tool called “Directshow Filter Dump.”

3.Once I have a Tivo recorded program in .mpg format, I use Ulead MovieFactory to set up and burn a DVD. Because the recorded program is in .mpg format, other DVD burner software should work.  I did try the Tivo website recommended Sonic MyDVD but it crashed on me and I dumped it for Ulead.
