“HP Deskjet 5650 Install Under WinXP”

I download the latest driver from HP for the Deskjet 5650 off HP’s support website.
I unzip the downloaded file and change the folder holding the unzipped files. I double click setup.exe and install starts but when it reaches the window, which says attach USB cable to printer, I never get a chance to attach the printer and the install backs itself out of the system! No indication of what is wrong other than saying there was an installation error.
I try adding a printer via the Start Menu, Settings, Printer menu. Same thing.
Finally, I connect the USB cable to the printer and the “Found New Hardware Wizard” comes up. I tell it the folder containing the unzipped HP driver files and the printer installs, no problem.
Now on some systems, just the setup.exe will install the printer without any problems at all but if you have a problem with this approach, try attaching the USB cable and running the “Find new hardware” wizard.
