"HP DV1000 - How to Replace the BIOS Battery"

16 February 2011

Summary: the battery in the HP DV1000 is a ML1220, 3 volt rechargeable and really should not have to be replaced but if you keep getting BIOS related errors or your laptop seems to continually have the incorrect time and date, make sure you replace with rechargeable.

Background:

The Basic Input Output System (BIOS) of  the HP DV1000 is entered by striking the Function Key 10 immediately after a system powers up.

The BIOS of the HP DV1000 holds various computer settings to include: time and date; boot device order; wireless adapter enable, etc.

BIOS settings are held in a special memory that must be kept alive any time power is completely removed from the DV1000 (power adapter and battery). This is done via a motherboard installed BIOS battery.

The BIOS battery in the HP DV1000 is a 3 volt rechargeable.

It is located on the motherboard and visible under the removable WI-FI adapter cover on the laptop bottom.

Although it is visible after the WI-FI adapter cover on the laptop bottom is removed, I am not sure it can be replaced without removing the entire laptop bottom.

The BIOS battery is simply pushed down into the battery holder and thus simply pried up out of the holder.

Tools:

Exacto knife or very small, thin blade, flat blade screwdriver.

For laptop bottom cover removal, a Phillips screwdriver with sharp or well defined "points".

How to replace the BIOS Battery:

Remove the laptop bottom cover.

For ease of replacement, you might want to remove the laptop speaker cable from the motherboard.

Use an Exacto knife or very small flat blade screwdriver to gently raise the BIOS battery out of the battery holder. The battery is simply pressed down into the holder.

Place new battery over holder with battery description on the top.

Press battery down into holder with a finger.

If you disconnected the speaker cable, reconnect it.

Reattach the laptop bottom cover.
