"HP DV1000 - How to Remove the Display"

18 February 2010

Summary: because there is no connector on the WI-FI antenna wires coming off the motherboard going to the antenna on the display, the bottom of the laptop must be removed.

Background:

It is possible to replace the LCD screen inside the DV1000 display without removing the display from the laptop. All that is required is that the bezel or outer plastic cover around the LCD screen be removed, the LCD be unscrewed from the display plastic shell and the flat video connector on the back of the LCD be unhooked.

Sometimes, it is as cheap or cheaper to buy a complete display versus just the LCD screen and thus display removal is required.

Unfortunately the WI-FI antenna (inside the display) wires connected to the motherboard do not have a quick disconnect under the display bezel that would allow the display to be removed without removing the laptop's bottom cover.

To remove the motherboard from the laptop, the display must be removed from the laptop.

Tools:

Phillips screwdriver with sharp points.

How to remove the display:

Remove the bottom cover.

With the laptop resting on the closed display, so you are looking at the component side of the motherboard, find the WI-FI adapter.  Attached to it are 2 wires: black and a gray. Use a marker to mark on the adapter which terminal gets which color wire and then lift the wire off the terminal. These wires are pushed down on the connector and you must remove them right at the connector. Do not pull on the wire.

With WI-FI antenna wires loose from adapter, flip laptop so it is resting on its bottom and open the display.

On the right side of the display, at the exposed hinge, you can see the black and gray wires of the WI-FI antenna coming from the motherboard and going into the display

The antenna wires are wrapped around some indents in the top cover to keep them from moving around. Use your fingers to unhook the wires from the top cover and then slowly begin pulling the wires out of the laptop.

At the left side hinge you will see the video cable coming out of the display. It might be under a white tag and foil flap.

There is a small loop of material attached to the video male connector that you use to pull the connector out of the motherboard female connector. Pull the male connector straight up out of the motherboard connector.

With the video male connector removed from the motherboard, go to the right hinge and remove the 2 screws holding the display hinge to the top cover.

Once the right hinge screws have been removed, go the the left hinge and remove the 2 screws holding the display to the laptop top cover.

Lift the display away from the laptop.

At this point, you may have to turn the laptop over to get the 2 antenna wires fished up through the top cover and completely removed from the laptop
